How to Create Compelling Career Stories

Being able to articulate your accomplishments and how you've handled challenges is important in your job search. Having a format to structure your responses makes it easier to create compelling career stories to:

  • Demonstrate your ability to handle tough situations, not just describe your responsibilities. (What you've done is the best evidence of what you can do.)

  • Show your impact, even in a smaller role, on a team, or as an individual contributor.

  • Highlight your qualifications and growth potential for the position you're pursuing.

In a job interview, use CARE stories when you're asked questions such as:

  • "Tell me about a time when you…"

  • "Can you describe a situation when…"

  • "What do you do when…"

  • "Have you ever…"

  • "Can you give me an example of…"

  • "Describe a time when…"

  • "Share an example of when…"

There are four components to the CARE formula:

(C) – Challenge. Identify the problem or challenge you faced.

(A) – Action. What actions did you take to address this problem?

(R) – Result. What happened as a result of your actions? What was the benefit to your team, manager, or the project?

(E) – Evaluation or Reflection. What did you learn? What skill or knowledge did you build? What would you do differently next time? Why does this story matter to the company you're interviewing with?
