How to Create Compelling Career Stories

Being able to articulate your accomplishments in a job interview is important, but at the executive level, interviewers aren't just listening for what you did. They're listening for whether you can be trusted with authority.

  • Show how your decisions changed outcomes other people depended on, whether that's P&L impact, board confidence, or risk avoided at scale.

  • Position yourself as someone who shapes strategy, not just someone who carries it out.

In a job interview, use CARE stories when you're asked questions such as:

  • "Tell me about a time when you…"

  • "Can you describe a situation when…"

  • "What do you do when…"

  • "Have you ever…"

  • "Can you give me an example of…"

  • "Describe a time when…"

  • "Share an example of when…"

There are four components to the CARE formula:

(C) – Challenge. Identify the problem or challenge you faced. What was at stake, reputational, financial, legal, or strategic?

(A) – Action. What actions did you take to address this problem? What were you specifically accountable for, and what did you see in that moment that other people in the room didn't?

(R) – Result. What happened as a result of your actions? How is the organization, or how are you, positioned differently now because of what you decided?

(E) – Evaluation or Reflection. Whose competing interests did you have to reconcile/influence? Who did you have to move without formal authority over them? Why does this story matter to the company you're interviewing with?
